Update

Our latest study is now officially published in the Journal of Molecular Biology! In this study, we show that we can rationally tune the degree to which prion-like domains become enriched in stress granules (SGs). Contrary to liquid-liquid phase separation models of SGs, enrichment of prion-like domains to SGs was not dependent on the concentration of the PrLD in the cell. Rather, specific compositional features drive enrichment in SGs. You can access the paper here.

We also have another publication earlier this year in PLOS Computational Biology examining the frequencies and functions of low-complexity domains across all known organisms. You can access this paper here.

The Ross Lab is in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Colorado State University. Our primary research interests involve prions and prion-like proteins, although we are also actively investigating the functions, structures, and regulation of low-complexity domains within proteins.

Our primary research toolkit includes:

  • Yeast genetics
  • Fluorescence microscopy
  • Protein purification and in vitro biochemistry
  • Bioinformatics
